What Is Genital Warts?

Genital warts are caused by a virus known as the humanpapilloma virus (HPV). There are many different types of HPV, but types 6 and 11 are the common causes of genital warts..

Some of the HPV types can cause cancer if not treated effectively. Cancer of the cervix (neck of the womb), vulva, vagina, anus, penis and throat have been linked to HPV types 16 and 18. (These are not the common types of HPV)

How Do You Become Infected With Genital Warts?

The human papilloma virus is easily passed from one person to another through skin-to-skin genital contact. This doesn’t need to be penetrative sex (vaginal, anal or oral sex), but could be close genital contact.

What Are the Symptoms of Genital Warts?

Most people who get HPV do not show any signs or symptoms (they do not get any warts), and the virus can go away by itself. This means you might not know if you or your partner has the virus.

If you do get warts you might notice fleshy growths, bumps, or skin changes which may appear anywhere in the genital or anal area.

Warts can appear from three weeks to a few months, or even years, after getting the virus.

Should I Get Tested for Genital Warts?

If you think that you may have HPV or Genital warts, do come in for an HPV test as they may be diagnosed by a doctor who will examine your skin and confirm the diagnosis. HPV may be diagnosed when you are having a smear test, a swab is taken during this time.

What Is the Treatment for Genital Warts?

Yes, there are different HPV treatment options and we can discuss these different Genital Warts treatment choices with you in our clinic.
