At London Doctors Clinic we offer Hepatitis tests for both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, as a stand alone or as part of a broader sti screen profiles.

Please note that each Hepatitis test will require an additional fee for the consultation time with a GP from £89 for a 15 minute appointment and these consultations are available at each of our 16 convenient private health clinics

Hepatitis B

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a virus that is carried in the blood and can affect the liver.

 

How Do You Become Infected With Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a very infectious disease – 100 times more infectious than HIV.

It can be spread by

  • Unprotected sexual intercourse
  • Sharing needles
  • Having a tattoo/piercing
  • From mother to baby (if mum is hep B positive)

 

What Are the Symptoms of Hepatitis B?

Symptoms for Hepatitis B can include tiredness, general aches and pains, high temperature, feeling unwell, loss of appetite, feeling and being sick and diarrhoea.

 

Should I Get Tested for Hepatitis B?

If your worried that you have Hepatitis B, then it might be worth having a test. Hepatitis B is diagnosed by a simple blood test. It is recommended that this is taken at least one month after any possible exposure to the infection.

 

 

How Will I Get My Hepatitis B Test Results?

A doctor will email you the results once we have them back – normally within 1-2 days using the standard screening method.

If the result is positive we may ask you to return to the clinic so we can discuss the results and offer treatment and further care.

 

What Is the Treatment for Hepatitis B?

There are different treatment options for managing Hepatitis B infection. This is generally managed by a specialist. LDC will arrange a referral so that you may be able to discuss this further.

 

Is There Any Way I Can Prevent Myself From Getting Hepatitis B?

Yes. There is a vaccination for Hepatitis B. This is available through our travel clinic. Please discuss this with one of our doctors to see if it may be appropriate for you.

 


 

Hepatitis C

What Is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a virus that is carried in the blood and can affect the liver.

 

How Do You Become Infected With Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is commonly caught by sharing contaminated needles, spoons and filters to inject drugs.

More rarely you can become infected by unprotected sexual intercourse or it may be passed from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.

 

What Are the Symptoms of Hepatitis C?

Many people do not experience any symptoms when they first become infected with Hepatitis C. Some experience vague flu-like symptoms, tiredness, joint aches and pains and nausea.

Some infected people remain well and their liver is unaffected. However, others can develop long standing health complications requiring ongoing treatment.

 

Should I Get Tested for Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is diagnosed by a simple blood test. It is recommended that this is taken at least one month after any possible exposure to the infection.

An early detection test is also available for use 10 days after possible exposure. This test is not 100% reliable and should always be followed up with a further screen at one month.

 

How Will I Get My Hepatitis C Test Results?

A doctor will email you the results once we have them back – normally within 1-2 days using the standard screening method or 4-6 hours using the fast track screening programme.

If the result is positive, we may ask you to return to the clinic so we can discuss the results and offer treatment and further care.
