What Is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is a curable sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a type of germ (bacterium).

How Do You Become Infected with Gonorrhoea?

You can get Gonorrhoea through unprotected sexual intercourse (vaginal, oral or anal) or sharing vibrators and other sex toys that have not been washed.

What Are the Symptoms of Gonorrhoea?

1 in 10 males have no symptoms, however some may notice;

  • A discharge from the tip of the penis
  • Pain or burning when you pass urine

Half of females have no symptoms, however some may notice;

  • Unusual vaginal discharge, may be thin/watery and green or yellow in colour
  • Pain or burning when you pass urine
  • Pain or tenderness in the lower abdominal area, particularly during sex
  • Bleeding between periods, heavier period and bleeding after sex

Prompt treatment is recommended to prevent serious complications such as infertility, and other chronic health problems.

Should I Get Tested for Gonorrhoea?

If you think that you may have Gonorrhoea, then you may want to get tested. The best time for testing is 2 weeks after any unprotected sexual intercourse or if you develop any symptoms.

Diagnosing gonorrhoea is done either by using a self-taken swab of the affected area or by performing a urine sample.

How Will I Get My Gonorrhoea Test Results?

A doctor will email you the results once we have them back – normally within 2-3 days. If the result is positive, we will contact you by email or phone and discuss gonorrhoea treatment options.

Will I Need to Get Retested?

Yes, we recommend that we follow up patients one week after treatment to ensure that this has been successful.

What Is the Treatment for Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is easily treated with a single dose of combination of antibiotics – one is usually given by injection.

You should not have sex (oral or using condoms) until one week after both you and your partner have completed treatment or given the all clear from the doctor.

Can I Get Gonorrhoea again?

Yes. To prevent this, ensure your partners have been treated before having sex with them again. Protect yourself with new partners by ensuring a condom is used for all vaginal/anal/oral contact. Ensure that both you and a new partner have a sexual health screen before any unprotected sex.
